For years the debate has raged over which type of site you should build; mini sites or authority sites. Yet Google seems to have come up with a deciding factor that could end the debate once and for all. But recently is seems as though Google has grown disillusioned by its previous liking for mini sites. The last several dances, or algorithm changes, seem to be in favor of the larger, more content rich, authority types of sites. This is Google's way of working towards offering their users better search results. But a mini site can still, believe it or not, have a positive use in your marketing.

It can be tempting to get into the black (profits) quicker by using a mini site. This technique can work in some cases. You can overlook the bigger picture, though, if you focus solely on fast profits. You could subdivide a niche into much smaller categories, each based on a few keywords. This would be the basis for a collection of mini sites, each one based on one of your keywords. This can be a good method to get high rankings for a number of sites in a short time, provided your keyword research was done right. If you do this, of course, you should be aware that Google is not a fan of mini sites.

Years ago it was possible to get a highly optimized minisite ranking very well, but that is not the case now in 2010. You can think of minisites and authority sites in terms of faster and slower - in that order. Think of an authority site as an investment. You can accurately think of it in terms of investing your efforts and some capital. Long term investments have risk, too, and there is no guarantee that the stocks you buy today will have value in ten years. When it comes to SEO and high rankings, then the authority site is much like a dinosaur that moves very slowly. But once it does, then you can monetize it very powerfully and earn more than you will from a handful of mini sites.

You'll have a much faster time of establishing your credibility in your field if you have an authority site rather than a mini site. Large sites filled with helpful information are just more credible to visitors. Many people simply make the leap that the person behind the larger site has a larger knowledge base to draw from. This is how credibility is often established. This is something that would not often happen with mini sites. That doesn't mean it never happens only that it happens rarely.

When making your choice between an authority site or a mini site, you have to consider many different factors. It can be tempting to make all your internet marketing decisions based on Google's preferences. While this makes a certain sense, we would not advise you to plan your entire marketing strategy solely on the basis of Google's policies. You always have the option, of course, of creating a variety of sites and testing which ones perform best.
